Boling Lecture-Chemical Biology of Metals and Metallodrugs
2021-04-12

Topic: Chemical Biology of Metals and Metallodrugs

Speaker: Prof. Guo Zijian

Time: 7:00 pm, April 23 2021, Friday

Venue: The Academic Hall at the Institute of Elemento-Organic Chemistry

Abstract

Metal ions play essential roles in life processes, and their malfunction could be related to a variety of diseases. Zinc ion, for example, has attracted much attention because of its key role in neural signal transmission, transduction and gene transcription, as well as its synergistic effect with other signalling molecules. Meanwhile, metallodrugs are widely applied in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Cisplatin, as a representative of metal antineoplastic drugs, is widely used in clinic, but its toxicity and drug resistance etc. affect its further application. This lecture will focus on the above two areas, highlighting the design of biological zinc sensors and their application for in vivo and in vitro imaging, and the design and the mechanism of action of novel platinum antitumor complexes.

Brief Biography

Prof. Guo received his PhD degree from the University of Padova and worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at Birkbeck College, the University of London. He worked also as a research associate at the University of Edinburgh. He joined the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Nanjing University as a professor of chemistry in 1999. He has co-authored over 250 publications since established his independent group. He was awarded the First Prize in Natural Sciences from Ministry of Education of China in 2015, and received the Luigi Sacconi Medal from the Italian Chemical Society in 2016. He was the recipient of the outstanding achievement award in 2020 from the Asian Society of the Biological Inorganic Chemistry. He was elected to the fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2017.
