Boling Lecture-Molecule Materials Aggregation: From 1 Dimension to 2 Dimension
2017-11-06

Academician Yuliang Li, a well-known chemist from Institute of Chemistry (Chinese Academy of Sciences), delivered a report named Molecule Materials Aggregation: From 1 Dimension to 2 Dimension to the undergraduates from College of Chemistry at 7:00 p.m. of October 27th. Prof. Jun Chen, dean of the College of Chemistry, presided over the lecture.

The lecture was started with the Chinese history of Zheng He's Voyages showing the national strength to the world in the early Ming Dynasty. Then he dwelled on that China was invaded by foreign powers in the late Qing Dynasty, which made us humiliate. And then he talked about the great progress and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, especially in the academic field. China is brought in line with international leading edge, continuing to narrow the gap. Finally, Academician Yuliang Li told the story of China's outstanding breakthrough in the field of chemistry with his own scientific research as an example.

Academician Yuliang Li introduced the development of graphite alkyne material to the students from three aspects in details, including the synthesis method, the band structure and the practical application. In his research, a large-area two-dimensional graphite alkyne with an intrinsic bandgap sp hybridization was successfully synthesized on the surface of copper alloy by coupling reaction of hexaylbenzene under the catalysis of copper. This kind of carbon material has become quite important because of his excellent research. This is the first report on the preparation of graphdiyne in the world. In the application, he specifically described the excellent performance of two-dimensional graphite alkyne in electricity, catalysis, energy, mechanics and other aspects, such as improving the photoelectric conversion efficiency in the perovskite solar cells, enhancing the performance of the battery anode materials, stabling single atomic metal of the high performance atomic catalyst. There is no doubt that his team has led the international research in this field, making significant contribution to the development of Chinese chemistry and world chemistry.

At the end of the report, students asked questions actively. A freshman asked that why the di-alkyne structure was chosen to be used to construct the graphite alkyne layer rather than mono- or tri-alkyne structures. The questions was highly praised by Academician Yuliang Li. After the lecture, there were still many students came forward to Academician Yuliang Li to consult other academic queries. The undergraduates from College of Chemistry benefited a lot from the lecture.

Boling lecture, as a major project aimed to nurture creative chemical talents, has been launched from 2003 by the College of Chemistry and held regularly on the evening of the last Friday of each month. Its lecturers, top-level chemists worldwide, guide students into academic world though vivid experiences and urge them to set up far-sighted goals at the same time strive for realizing their dreams.
